# Zama

> Zama is the fastest growing confidentiality protocol for onchain finance, built on Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE). The Zama Protocol enables confidential assets to be issued, traded, and managed natively on public blockchains, with full verifiability and programmable compliance. It runs on any L1 or L2, keeping amounts and balances encrypted at all times, including during processing, with no new chain and no trusted intermediary.

Zama is to public blockchains what HTTPS was to the internet: just as HTTPS unlocked banking, commerce, and enterprise applications on the web, Zama enables institutions to operate on public blockchains through encrypted, verifiable, and programmable onchain computation. Developers deploy confidential smart contracts in Solidity using the ERC-7984 confidential token standard, without learning a new language or handling cryptography directly.
